Common Visitors to Farmworker Housing

Several state, federal, and non-governmental agencies routinely visit farmworker housing or worksites to provide services for workers or to enforce workers’ rights.

The Most Common State Agencies That Visit Farmworker Housing Include:

    • Helps farmworkers apply for public benefits and medical insurance and provides transportation to medical visits.

  • Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA)
    • Investigates workplace illnesses and injuries and inspects conditions of farmworker work sites and housing.

The Most Common Federal Agencies Include:

  • U.S. Department of Labor, Wage & Hour Division (USDOL)
    • Investigates employment violations for agricultural workers, including H-2A and H-2B workers for violations related to pay, contract, housing, and other federal regulations.
  • Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC)
    • Investigates and enforces complaints of discrimination in the workplace, such as acts of employment discrimination related to sex, race, disability, and national origin.

You should always tell government officials the truth. If you report issues with your employment and your employer, housing provider, or recruiter threatens to retaliate against you, consider reporting these issues to the agency or seeking legal counsel to advise you further regarding your legal rights.

It is unlawful to interfere with an investigation. Victims and witnesses of the interference or of any labor violations may be eligible for money damages and other relief. If you are concerned about answering questions, you can decline to answer and talk to an attorney first.

Farmworkers who need assistance reporting a labor violation or accessing services in Michigan can call the Farmworker Hotline (1-800-968-4046).
